Yoga is an ancient practice which according to the ancient texts has the main objective to create balance between the physical body, mind and energy. It is a system of Indian philosophy which includes the eight limbs (stages) of yoga which offer guidance on how to create a peaceful life.
Our western science is slowly catching up to the array of benefits that a well structured yoga practice can provide.
What benefits are there to yoga?
Physical benefits of a regular yoga practice can include building strength, flexibility, balance and stability. Other benefits also include reducing stress, improving body awareness and mental wellbeing.
Is there only one type of yoga?
There are many different styles and elements which are defined as yoga. Some of the main aspects are postures (asana), breath techniques (pranayama) and meditation (Dhyana), which are all part of the eight limbs of yoga mentioned above.
Each of these have many different styles and approaches depending on the intention of the practice.
